A Syracusan man and his servant arrive in Ephesus – a busy, bustling, thriving town. But, although they’re strangers, everyone seems to know their names. People give them gifts, lend them money and – strangest of all – they seem to have acquired two very unhappy wives. Are they mad? Or is the town full of lunatics, witches, and sorcerers?

The Castle Players’ 2022 Summer Production transforms the play’s twin cities of Syracuse and Ephesus into two rival New York neighbourhoods in the early 1930’s. Shakespeare’s madcap tale of shipwreck and separation, identical twins and mistaken identity is played out on a new, specially constructed open-air stage. Lavish stage design, a live band, and a distinctly “Peaky Blinders” aesthetic provide the backdrop to a wonderful evening of music, madness, mayhem, and monogamy.

There is no allocated seating and no covered area.

Please bring your own chairs and warm/waterproof clothing. The performance will continue regardless of the weather. Customers are requested not to use umbrellas in the seating areas in order not to obstruct the view of other audience members.

Please do not picnic in the ‘auditorium.’ You can picnic before the show in the beautiful grounds of the Bowes Museum. There will be an on-site food stall selling hot food and drinks, plus a fully stocked bar, both open from 6pm. Orders can be placed before the show to be collected at the interval.

Running time approx. 3 hours (includes interval of 30 minutes).
