Hedda Gabler - Nov 2019
Event DetailsFrom: 22nd November, 2019
To: 23rd November, 2019
At: The Witham, Barnard Castle
Our next production is the classic Ibsen play 'Hedda Gabler'. If you have any questions about the production, please email the director, Libby Harding.
About The Production
Hedda has returned from her honeymoon to discover that married life isn’t all that it is cracked up to be. Feeling increasingly trapped with her doting husband, Hedda struggles with the realisation that the rest of her life will be determined by her marriage. The play takes place over a period of two days as Hedda tries to control all those around her, only to see it disastrously backfire. Although the original play was written and set in the 1890s, Libby is using an adaptation of the text by Patrick Marber. This adaptation brings the language into the 21stcentury, but intentionally does not specify a time period. The Autumn Castle Players production will be set in the 1920s; with the themes of economic uncertainty, increasing women’s rights and a departure from Edwardian values, mirroring the position Hedda finds herself in.
